Hello GoodBye – 09.02.13 – Ft: The Balloons + Pepe Belmonte

Live music on Hello GoodBye; with absurdest-rock trio The Balloons and folk-blues troubador Pepe Belmonte.

CJ Proud, Dave Swift and Rik Irvine have been breathing new life into The Balloons for the best part of the last four decades.Slapped senseful by Beefheart, Devo, Henry Cow and Led Zeppelin, The Balloons remain dark and cheery purveyors of juddery, shuddery, jittery, jottery, abstract rockery!

Having grown up in rural south west Ireland, it is hardly surprising to find that Pepe Belmonte has a taste for Irish folk music as well as for old blues and traditional folk. With his distinctive vocal, guitar and harmonica style Pepe’s sensitive songwriting has a strong sense of imagery, melody, rhythm and rhyme.

Hello GoodBye – 02.02.13 – Ft: Apostille, Bob Meyer + Little Penguin

We have a mouthwatering 3 course meal this Saturday lunchtime on The Hello GoodBye Show, featuring live music from; Apostille, Bob Meyer & Little Penguin.

Apostille emerged from the wayward pop-centric impulses of Please guitarist Michael Kasparis. What began as a self-taught class in inclusive exploration has bloomed into a self-erasing exercise in broadcasting; an adrenalin-veined, ecstatic language that sweeps up a mess of electronics into a mound of emotive discharge. As direct as possible all the time.

Bob Meyer bridges the great Blues divide between South London and the Deep South.
By day, Bob is a busy London truck driver but it is at night that he really kicks into gear, presenting and producing Bob’s Folk Show on Radio Wey and Folk Radio UK.
He organized and hosted the London Folk and Roots Festival in 2012 and this June he is organizing The British Folk Radio Week.
Bob’s debut album ‘All This Is That’ is due for re-release this coming May through Malicious Damage Records.

Graham Boosey started Little Penguin when he wanted to play at a new local electronica night in his hometown of Southend on Sea, so he picked up his Game Boy Camera and began composing his own brand of experimental-soundscape, noise and drone music.

Hello GoodBye – 26.01.13 – curated by Victoria Yeulet Ft: The Raincoats + Tom Paley

Victoria Yeulet curates Hello GoodBye this Saturday lunchtime, with live guests – and living legends – The Raincoats & Tom Paley.

Victoria Yeulet is a musician, music historian and film maker living in London. She has performed in The Television Personalities (Domino Records), Congregation (Bronzerat), and her latest band Sisters an all female Gospel group. She has recently had a chapter about Women in old-time and country music published in the ʻWomen make Noiseʼ book on Supernova Press.

She will be playing music from various genres from 1920s-70s focused on her research interest of the history of women in western music and will be chatting to musical guests The Raincoats and Tom Paley

The Raincoats were one of the most experimental bands that immediately followed the initial burst of punk rock in the late ’70s. With their minimalistic approach to guitar-driven folk-rock, the band developed a distinctive, jagged sound, punctuated by a shrill violin. The Raincoats were also one of the first all-female post-punk bands, which wasn’t common in the late ’70s and early ’80s. When they were recording, the band gained a small cult following in their native England and an even smaller audience in America; they broke up in 1984. Nearly ten years later, the band became a hip name in alternative rock, thanks to Kurt Cobain’s mention of the group in the liner notes to a Nirvana album. Geffen picked up the rights to the Raincoats’ catalog and reissued their albums in late 1993 and 1994. The band reunited and toured with Nirvana in the U.K. before heading out on their own tour of the U.S. in 1994. Two years later, the Raincoats released Looking in the Shadows, which was produced by Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Tom Paley began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and was soon well- known for his instrumental skill. For a time, he performed in a duo with Woody Guthrie. Later, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen, he formed THE NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS, the group that generated a great wave of interest in the traditional string band music of the rural South.

After the breakup of the original NLCR, he formed the short-lived OLD RELIABLE STRING BAND (together with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose) and then moved to Sweden, residing there for three years (1963-65) before moving to England, where he has lived ever since, touring often in America, the UK, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, both solo and with other musicians.

Hello GoodBye – 19.01.13 – Ft: Woman’s Hour, Lost Harbours + Joe Oldfield

Despite the hostile weather conditions here in London town it remains business as usual here on Hello GoodBye, with live music from; Woman’s Hour, Lost Harbours & Joe Oldfield.

Woman’s Hour are a four piece band based in London, formed in 2011. The band consists of siblings Fiona Jane (vocals) and William (guitar), along with Nick (bass) and Josh (keyboards). Their stripped back music plays with dense sounds and dead space, held together by patient grooves and an upfront honest delivery.
NEW 7″ SINGLE: ‘To the End’ released on Parlour Records 11th March

Lost Harbours are a two-piece experimental folk duo from Southend on Sea; influenced by an eclectic array of sources from 60’s psych folk and modern composition to musique concrete and drone.

Also, regular Hello GoodBye’s live sound engineers Joe Oldfield, steps up from behind the scenes to take centre stage with his acoustic guitar in hand. Joe is a 24 year old musician from Deptford. After studying at music college he has been involved with a number of bands, including; Ampersand and The Foul Geese.
Joe’s love of American and English folk and blues led him to pick up the guitar and start playing his own versions of traditional songs with some original material thrown in.
