Hello GoodBye – 02.11.13 – Ft: Lene Lovich

Lene Lovich band

Hello GoodBye presents the unique Lene Lovich LIVE in session this lunchtime!

Detroit-born legendary post-punk pop singer Lene Lovich hit the top of the UK charts with her single “Lucky Number” in 1979, and was crowned the “Queen of Quirk”, influencing a generation of pop and alternative acts, from Nina Hagen to Boy George, and from Madonna to Dresden Dolls. A normally reclusive figure, Lovich turned her back on the limelight after her third album No Man’s Land was released in 1982 amid disagreements with her record company about her unwillingness to compromise her groundbreaking visual style for the then newly emergent MTV. Subsequently she has recorded only two albums in the last thirty years. Lovich’s unique vocal and visual style, along with her catchy but experimental songwriting, has exerted a huge influence over alternative pop culture and garnered her many plaudits and continued interest. She has been described as everything from “Kate Bush on acid” to “the New Wave Maria Callas”. Her hits “Lucky Number”, “Say When”, “Bird Song” and “New Toy” are still regular features in the clubs and radio of Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA. In May 2012, Lene joined forces with Subterraneans frontman Jude Rawlins for a celebration of the music of German composer Kurt Weill. During the tour they hatched an idea to form a new band to take Lene’s classic material back on the road. Jude immediately recruited bassist Lydia Fischer and drummer Morgan King in June, and keyboardist Kirsten Morrison joined in July. It was a baptism of fire for the new band, after just one low-key show at London’s much-loved 12 Bar club, their next appearance was headlining the annual Drop Dead Festival in Berlin. 2013 sees the Lene Lovich Band back on the road in the UK and Europe.

Listen live in Central London on 104.4 FM or world-wide on-line via Resonance FM from noon until 1.30pm (GMT).

Hello GoodBye – 26.10.13 – Ft: Gertrude, Council Tax Band + Ruby Day

Gertrude, Council Tax Band and Ruby Day perform live in the studio this Saturday lunchtime.

Formed as a collective in 1996 Gertrude are an alternative 4 piece who weave electric cello, melodica and clarinet with traditional rock instruments to create a unique melting pot of sound. Live, the band is energetic, rhythmic and intense – with comedy moments thrown in for good measure. Gertrude draw their inspiration from many sources including the variety of student, political and artistic scenes that exist within the city. They have been influenced by punk rock’s ‘Do it Yourself’ ethos, critical feminism as well as numerous bands, events, people and happenings.

Gertrude’s new LP ‘Love Axe Wish List’ (Urban Missfits) – the group’s first ‘vinyl’ release is launched tomorrow (Sunday 27th October) with an event at The Lexington.

Consisting of two guitars, synth & drums, Bedford’s Council Tax Band write exuberant songs about boredom, disappointment and swimming pool closures; as such they’re sure to be a money-spinner with the lucrative pre-teen demographic.
James, Andy, Charlie & Laura have unremarkable haircuts, and lack an interesting backstory. Following the lead of seemingly every other sodding band in the country, their one wish is that one day they too might sell their music to be used on adverts flogging cardigans and mobile phones to the great unwashed.
You can download their first EP for FREE HERE.

Ruby Day is a London based 17 year old singer / songwriter who writes songs like this – A Little Seasick.
She says, ‘I play guitar and sing a bit… I guess you could call me a musician, depending on how loosely you use the term. I play modern folk/acousticy kinds of things. Mainly because I don’t have a band and electric guitar was too difficult.’

Tune in via a good old fashioned wireless on 104.4 FM in Central London or on-line via Resonance FM.

Hello GoodBye – 12.10.13 – Ft: The Wave Pictures + Teta Mona

The Wave Pictures and Teta Mona perform live in the studio.

London based trio The Wave Pictures made their debut live radio appearance on Hello GoodBye back in the Spring of 2007 and have since gone on to gain plaudits, fans and road miles. Last year they spent 6 weeks driving around America in a small van on tour with Allo Darlin’. The result of this trip was the songs that make up their new double album ‘City Forgiveness’, released on Moshi Moshi on October 21st. They headline The Jazz Cafe in London on Wednesday 13th November.

Self proclaimed South Italian wild cat and former Screaming Tea Party front woman Teta Mona is today performing solo and acoustic on the show.
Her song ‘Soya Sun’ is included on compilation omnibus album ‘International Pop Underground Sounds (sickness of a fourteen year old girl ) vol.1’ on the Japanese label 14 Years Records. Teta Mona is performing at the LP’s London launch party at The Macbeth (Hoxton) this coming Monday 14th October.

Hello GoodBye returns! – Sat. 5th Oct. – Ft: Skinny Girl Diet, Benjamin Folke Thomas + Rowan Coupland

hello goodbye returns 051013
Live music returns in it’s regular Saturday lunchtime slot on Resonance 104.4 FM with The Hello GoodBye Show where the intention is to hit the ground running with 3 sets of live performers joining us in the studio; Skinny Girl Diet, Benjamin Folke Thomas and Rowan Coupland… it promises to be frantic but much fun so please be certain to tune in from noon until 1.30pm.
Skinny Girl Diet are a ‘fierce girl gang from London‘ who proffer potent Punk-Pop perfection performed with power and panache. Hot off the heels of their superbly successful support slot for Primal Scream at the prestigious Roundhouse, this trio are pulling up trees a-plenty on the thriving London indie live music scene, hear them here before the entire population of the planet catches up!
Benjamin Folke Thomas’s debut album “Too Close To Here” is one of the most keenly awaited releases from London’s thriving folk & roots scene.
Folke Thomas’s live ability has attracted a dedicated fanbase and rave reviews, including Q Magazine (“stunning playing… his finger-picking is the best you will ever hear”) and The Guardian (“stands out like Oliver Reed at an AA meeting”).  In an attempt to capture his talent on record, cult-label Bucketfull Of Brains released the eponymously-titled EP in 2010, described by the Sunday Times as “a convincing called card…reminiscent of Greenwich Village circa 1965.”
In 2012 Folke Thomas toured in the UK, Spain and Texas and received widespread radio play. “Too Close To Here” is set for release by Bucketfull Of Brains / Proper Music in September 2013.
Rowan Coupland is one of the lesser-spotted talents to emerge out of the interwoven folk scenes of Brighton and London. Although the Willkommen Collective became famous for sharing a large pool of adept musicians, Coupland’s records have always been painstakingly produced alone, from the first hum of an electric guitar to a choir made of 50 iterations of his own voice, to violins and clarinets and accordions, pianos, organs, and zithers tumbling against ukuleles and glockenspiels.

Leaving England for Paris, Vancouver and finally Berlin, his music is as nomadic as his passport, drawing on everything from Ethiopian Jazz to Appalachian ballads, old spirituals, madrigals and gamelan, and his live performances see him stalking the stage and stepping out into the audience, harp drawn close, singing old stories of love and new ones of streetlights and the darkened city riverbanks.

NB* Please note that contrary to the previous entry on this blog Peggy Seeger is sadly unable to join us in the studio today.
