Saturday 22nd May 2021. Today: Shingai’s new LP Too Bold is a genre-fluid tour de force that sounds as refreshing as it does vital. Shingai finds a freedom of expression that is palpable and truly liberating, the spine-tingling climax contained within the coda of the title track Too Bold is a good case in point, a sensational and cathartic, deep soul exploration that succeeds in stirring an uplifting, emotional and resonant response within the listener. Unlike Shingai’s former three albums made with her hugely successful, chart topping ensemble Noisettes, Too Bold is a fully independent release. Small world South London is given a silver-screen sensibility, occupied in equal measure by pedal powered dinosaur safari’s and post-colonial female empowerment.
